Travel Tip 38: Don’t leave home without traveller cheques
When my friends and I went trekking in Thailand and stayed a few nights with the local tribes. One of us found he lost USD3000 when we returned to our humble lodging one late evening. There was no telling who took it. Other than the locals, there were a few travelers who were staying with the tribe too. In fact, he said he found it tough to believe that the locals took it. They did treat us well, with their warm and friendly disposition and generous hospitality. Fortunately, we didn’t have to pool money to buy him an air ticket. He had some traveler’s cheques with him. Don’t leave home without them.
The merits of traveler’s cheques are:
Security You can have a peace of mind even you lose or misplace these cheques. They cannot be encashed. The person that is enpowered to cash them is you. Plus, you can file for a refund if the cheques are lost or stolen.
Easy Replacement: Usually you can get a replacement within 24 hours if you misplace or lose them.
Monitor Expenditure: You can track your expense by knowing where and when you encash them.
The inconvenience of traveler cheques include
Bank fees: All banks charges a fee, and the fees vary from banks to banks.
Exchange fluctuations: You can incur a lost if the exchange rates are not in your favor.
Difficult to convert: Some local banks might not accept traveler cheques. This means you might have to travel into the city to get it encash.
