There are many fascinating travel destinations in China. But Beijing was never considered as the ideal destination for those interested in the historic beauty and grandeur of China. Until now.

Billions of dollars have been invested to restore various historic sites and buildings in and around the city of Beijing. One such example is the Ming Dynasty City Wall. Fallen into disrepair and allowed to be forgotten, 2,600 people build their homes around this monument. Some even took pieces from the Wall to build their homes!

Built in 1419, this south-east corner tower was one of the key components of the City Wall. This particular stretch is about 1.5km in length. The area has since been restored. Residents were re-located and the area cleared. One year of restoration work salvaged this historic monument and a beautiful city park has been build around it to enhance the enjoyment of the site.

Besides this site, numerous other buildings have been rescued and restored. Some notable sites are:

Yongdinmen - the south gate that was built in 1552, one of the seven gates guarding entrance into the capital city of Beijing
Houshen Temple - probably built in 1605 during the Yuan dynasty, its restoration has breathed new life into the cultural vibrancy of the city
Summer Palace - built in 1750 as a birthday present for his mother, Emperor Qianlong took 15 years to complete this beautiful project
White Pagoda Temple - this temple took 8 years to build during A.D. 1271, it was designed by famous Nepalese architect and technologist, Arniger. This is the biggest Buddhist pagoda from the Yuan Dynasty ever discovered in China. It is also the oldest Buddhist pagoda in the Beijing area.

There are many other treasures in Beijing and it is well worth your while to visit them. Accommodations in Beijing is not a problem as there are many world class hotels in Beijing.
