Beijing - The Olympic City 2008
If you have ever wanted to visit China’s capital Beijing, there is no better time than 2008 to do so.
For the past few years, Beijing has been a hot bed of construction, re-construction and restoration projects. But all that dust has settled and the Beijing that emerge is more than ready for the Olympics 2008. In fact, never before has Beijing been so visitor-friendly as today.
With a highly mobile population of around 14 million people, it is a crowded city. This is a city steeped in history, culture and action.
Since King Wu declared it as the capital city in 1057 B.C this city had been variously named Ji, Zhongdu, Dadu, and finally Beijing in 1421 as declared by the Ming Dynasty Emperor ChengZu. To the rest of the world, the city was known as Peking until 1949, where the city’s name was finally corrected to Beijing, as it is known today.
Beijing is a fascinating city, where modern buildings co-exist with ancient structures. In fact, because of the Olympics coming to Beijing, many of these old buildings have benefited. They have been variously restored, renovated and preserved when they would have once upon a time been simply demolished to make way for “progress”.
For accommodations, there is a long list of world-class hotels in Beijing that you can choose from. Some hotels boast all the modern comforts while others rely on their rustic charm. But whether you are there for business or for pleasure, Beijing is one city that you must visit this year.
The official home page of the city is http://en.beijing2008.cn/index.shtml and it contains a wealth of information.
