Travel Tips 34: Why Should You Buy Travel Insurance
“Insurance is like a parachute, if you don’t have it when you need it, its too late”.
So even if you just intend to go for a short 3-day vacation, get a travel insurance. You can get from travel insurance online or off line very conveniently and at a reasonable price. With terrorism looming behind the clouds, you never know if the flight will be delayed due to terrorist scare or stringent security check. Even if you are an optimist that believe such things will not happen to you, holiday insurance can be your security blanket in many ways
Hospitals & Medical
You will be covered for medical cares and hospitalization should you require such services while overseas. The hospital and medical cover of such travel policy stops when you are back to your home country. The advantage of getting a travel insurance is to minimize inconvenience caused by an accident, injury or illness, and to defray all or part of the cost. If the accident, injury or illness is serious, the travel insurance might even cover the cost of your return home usually via commercial flights.
Baggage Loss
This means you are covered for the loss or damage to your luggage and personal effects while you are traveling. Do read the fine prints on what is covered. Don’t expect every item in your luggage is covered.
Cancellation & curtailmentThis serves to cover your financial loss if you have to terminate or cut short your trip under certain circumstances. Take heed that your insurance will not covered you if you decide to terminate or cut short a trip due to your whims and fancies. There are guidelines on what can or cannot be claimed. For example, you break your leg a week before a skiing trip is a valid reason.
Personal Liability
Tourists sometimes make mistakes inadvertently in their host countries. They sometimes ended up getting sued in the host countries. The liability section can protect your legal costs which can be substantial. If you accidentally break a Fabergé egg, you would be glad to have a personal liability coverage. FYI, Peter Carl Faberge made 69 eggs and one of his most famous egg, the Winter Egg, was sold for USD9,579,500 in 2002.
Anything can happen while traveling. I remembered 10 years ago while I was holidaying in Perth, my flight was delayed by a day because one food service truck accidentally hit the plane. Until today, I cannot visualize how a small truck can cause damage to a big plane which is much higher. Anyway, I received compensation from my insurance company on top of the free lodging and food from the airline.
Even if you only remember to buy at the 11th hour, take comfort that buying travel insurance online is pretty easy. You just need to provide your travel plan and most travel insurance online stores will generate a quote for your immediate action.
It’s always better to play safe, literally.
