Travel Tips 35: Tips to Make Traveling Easy for the Elderly
The elderly may find it more stressful to travel over the holidays and there are ways to make it is much easier trip for them and for you.
1. Medicine - Many elderly people take daily medications so make sure you have plenty of it. Pack into 2 bags and put one in the luggage and one in your daily carrier or handbag for easy access when you are doing sightseeing. That way, if you happen to lose to your luggage, you still have the medicines in your carrier/handbag. To be on a safe side, bring the prescription too.
If you are flying, get your doctor to write a note on the type of medication your elderly traveler needs. You will have to show this to security officers.
It is a good idea to carry their medical history with you when you travel. The medical history can help medical professionals that aren’t familiar with your elderly traveler ’s needs assist you if you aren’t able to tell them
2. Luggage - Don’t use a hand held luggage as your hands might be needed to help your elderly travelers on staircase, escalators and even traveling belt. Invest on luggages with wheels.
3. Moving around at Airport - Airports are huge. Even your elderly travel companion can walk, you might want a wheelchair so he/she won’t get tired and you won’t get patient when he/she moves along too slowly. Contact the airline in advance, they are more than willing to accommodate such needs.
You may want to arrive at the airport an hour earlier than specified if you need special assistance. During the holiday season you will find the airport to be very crowded so you might choose an early morning or late night flight to avoid the crowds.
4. Oxygen Tanks - Talk with the company that delivers the oxygen tanks and arrange for them to send the additional tanks you need when you land at the airport. If you are driving then you will be able to have the oxygen tanks delivered to the hotel or the residence where you are staying. Even if your oxygen tank provider doesn’t cover the area where you are going for the holidays, they can put you in touch with another company that does.
Just because a person is old doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy traveling for the holidays. To make them enjoy the trip, you have to do your homework and take the necessary precautions and actions to make the trip safe and enjoyable for them. By doing so, you too can enjoy and will not collapse with stress.
