Travel Tips 28: Protect Your House While Traveling
Blogger David Airey had his domain hijacked the very next day after he left for his India trip. If that can happen, what do you think of your house? This is especially important if you are not living in a building but a bungalow-type house in the sub-urban areas.
You don’t want undesired elements to know that the house is free for all to rob. A programmable electrical timer is a good alternate to mentor. You can
- Program the timer to put on lights and any other equipment at the desired time
- Setup the lighting in such a way that there is change in the pattern of lighting and some light can come on and off even in late nights.
- Connect a tape recorder with automatic light system. Feed in some common voices, noise in a tape, and insert it in recorder. Let it play once or twice in a day to insinuate that someone is in the house and it is not deserted.
Other stuff you can do include:
- Getting your friendly neighbors to help you collect mails and make sure no one is watching your house.
- Arranged the landscaping company to do your gardening and mowing so that your garden doesn’t look unattended
- Get your newspaper delivery service to stop throwing the dailies at your front porch.
- Inform the police so that they pay extra attention to your house when petrolling. If you are liking in a building, inform the security officer.
