Travel Tip 13: Enjoy Air Traveling with Kids
Traveling with kids may make you feel that you should have another trip just to wind down and relax. If this is the first time you are traveling with your kids and you are going by air, please plan. Most adults don’t like to travel long distance because of the discomfort that comes with it. Children are naturally active and they hate it even more than the adults. But you really don’t want them to be running up and down the aisle and disturb other passenger. So, you must keep them entertained.
What can you do on board?
1. Explained to them how the plane works and how important it is for passengers to behave themselves so that the pilots, stewards and stewardesses can perform their job properly. It’s exactly like school, there must be orders and disciplines. When they are seated, point out to them what the stewards and stewardesses are doing.
2. Get them involved in find the seats and helping to pack the luggage into the overhead luggage compartment. Take the opportunity to explain to them that what they may want to eat, play, read should be taken out of the carry-on before they are hauled into the overhead compartment. It may be tough to get their carry-on out because more luggages will be placed into that same overhead luggage compartment
3. Get them seated by the window so that they can watch the plane taking off. Let them be fascinated by the ground moving away below. After the ground disappeared, get colour pencils and paper out and let them draw what they have just seen. Alternatively, get them to draw their ideal holidays, home, whatever.
4. If they are getting reckless, explain to them very patiently that they can take a walk to the furthest bathroom to use the facility and walk back quietly. The other way is to challenge them to beat each other in some sit-down stretching exercises.
5. Get them to watch a cartoon or play computer games. These days, most planes are equipped with mini TV. Alternatively, bring some small board games or card games or even some books.
Getting on board the plane is a big thing for the kids. You don’t want to dampen their high spirit too much. You just need to explain to them that everyone must behave in an orderly and disciplined manner. You can show them newspaper clips of people who were arrested after the planes touched down for misbehaving. Don’t use a threatening voice, just be stern and speak in a method-of-fact tone. Of course, you can promise them a special treat, if everybody behaves, after you touch down.
