Travel Tips 7: No headaches over Luggage Lost
Ever lost of your bags? Or your bags were sent to the wrong destination and it will take weeks for you to get it back? You probably won’t think of them unless the disaster hit you right into your face. You probably think you are insured if your bags were lost. Not true. Items such as jewelry, electronics, furs and negotiable instruments are not covered by the airlines if lost or stolen, so keep those items with you on the plane.
Well, not all airlines treat their passengers equally. Many give more priority to first class and frequent fliers over. Even they are willing to compensate your lost, do remember that what you will receive is in a depreciated value. Before you get that, you have to provide proofs of receipts if the items exceed a certain value.
So what can you do to protect yourself from baggage problems?
1. Pack light and take your luggage on the plane with you.
Next, would be to take those items that you will need shortly after getting off the plane, such as toiletries and items needed for meetings or gifts for those you may be traveling to visit. Remember those electronic devices, furs, jewelry and the items not covered by the airlines in case something does happen.
2. Make sure it’s easy to identify your bag.
We are not talking of sticking traveling stickers so that your bag stands out like a crane among the chicken. Your name and contact information must be clearly located on the outside of your baggage as well as inside in case. This is an added precaution just in case the tags put on the bags fall off and the airline folks needs to contact you. Take a quick picture of your bag before checking in, just in case something is broken off or torn apart during the flight.
3. Check your bag on arrival.
When you arrived, don’t shoot off, open up to take a quick look to ensure nothing was skimmed off the top by criminals with access to your bags. This last suggestion may seems a little extravagant. You can always ship the luggage overnight via FedEx But there are people actually pay extra just to have that peace of mind and their baggage simply delivered to their door.

yup, the airline replaced my lost luggage with a brand new one. But I much prefer my battered old one.
