Travel Tips 4: For Single Woman Travelers
More and more women are traveling alone either for business or on a pleasure trip. To ensure that the trip is nothing but pleasantness, it is imperative for women to take safety precautions. Like it or not, robbers and other criminal would prefer to take out a woman compare to a man.
Use the following travel safety tips to be as safe and secure as possible:
1. Respect laws, cultural and religious rules and customs
You must familiar with the laws and customs of the countries you are visiting. In a Muslim country, it is illegal to invite persons of opposite sex to your hotel room. The strict ones will even prohibit a man and woman to stay in the same hotel room if they cannot prove that they are legally married. In Buddhist country like Thailand, you can be barred from entering a temple if you are not in a womanly attire like skirt or dress. Whilst in some countries. their public code of conduct may prohibit hugging and kissing in public. When you are in Rome, do what the Roman does. It is alway good and nice to respect the laws and the cultural and religious rules and customs of your hosts.
2. Observe dress codes
Fashion makes a statement, which is why you do not want to send a wrong message. Chinese actress wore a dress with a Japanese Red Sun symbol and she was ostracized by her own countrymen. What would happen to you if you unwittingly hurt the Chinese sensitivity, especially if you are an overseas Chinese. To her, it’s fashion but not to the public. So, not everyone perceives fashion the way you do. Do you know Muslim women swim with a special swim suit which cover from neck down to ankle? So think twice if you want to go skinny dipping and sashay around in your skimpy bikini? A conservative one piece swim suit might be more acceptable. Overall, jeans or pants and t-shirt covering most of your bodies are a better option for casual traveling. Pant suits will be excellent for business. By the way, Jeans and pants are safer than a skirt or dress if you need to run or defend yourself.
3. Blend with the public.
Let your host country think that you are a frequent visitor and thereby cannot be fooled easily. Observe what’s the local fashion and pop by the shop to get a local dress. Don’t go buy tourist-stuff. For example, the locals in Singapore don’t wear orchid motif sun-dress or shirt but you can bet that the tourists do. Wear it occasionally to give an impression of being native or being familiar with the place. Otherwise, wear one or two local accessories such as hat, chains, and scarves. When you are dining, pick some local dish. Experience and savor some new taste and at the same time be thought as a long-term stay visitor and not a newbie. Blending yourself with public is the best safety measure during travel.
4. Be armed with protective devices
Many safety devices can be bought to use as protective device. If you can’t bring these into the host country. Get the hotel concierge you to direct you to a travel store or hardware store. You can get a pepper spray; it is a high-pressure extract of pepper. It’s spray on assailant’s face should disable him for a few minutes. Another option is a stun gun with electrostatic high voltage charge. It will provide heavy shock to assailant and weaken his muscles.
5. Be alert of your surrounding and use common sense when weary of something or someone.
This is why it is good to research the place before you go and keep a list of important local telephone numbers in your mobile phone and on paper. I have discussed this tip in an earlier post, 2 travel tips to first time travelers.
As a solitary traveler, it is advisable to be go to the less beaten tracks. If you must, you must show lots of confidence in what you are doing. Criminals would pray on the weaker ones. They will normally stay clear of those whom they suspect can protect themselves, will fight back or has someone looking out for the.
